Compressor runs, but stops and sometimes starts and stops again 921153101 Craftsman Air compressor
When I turn compressor on, it will pressure up and stop like it should. Upon using some air, the motor may or may not start again. Sometimes it seems to run, but sounds different and stops. Then in time it will try to run and stop again. My son used it and he put oil in it. Could the oil be too thick or wrong kind? He said he talked to some Sears repair man to find out what to use. The initial start up will pressure and be fine, when pressure drops and it should run again, sometimes it will not and sometimes it will be a short run and stop. I was looking for a thermal overload and have not found it yet. The cylinder does not feel hot like it is locking up and it does not make any noise like it is. I would like to fix it if at all possible; if I can find out what is wrong.

More information...the initial start up of compressor seems fine and it will pressure up to the correct point and stop. As air is used and the compressor kicks back on, it runs slow and then stops before much air is pumped into tank.

This may be the check valve or the pressure switch causing the problem. The check valve will most often be right on the little tube that attaches to the pressures switch. Remove the cover to the pressure switch and cycle the compressor a few times and watch the switch to see if you can see it kicking in and out as the machine does what it does.
